Our Mission
The Phillipsport Community Center Association, Inc. is a community-based volunteer resource center located in the rural Mamakating Valley area of Sullivan County, New York. Our mission is to identify, develop, and facilitate caring and vital support services which are not provided by our local government or community. We work as a community regularly toward the enhancement of the quality of life for all members of our community through social, educational, recreational, and health programs.
Founded in 1956, the Phillipsport Community Center has been an enduring presence in the Mamakating Valley Community. We are housed in the historic (circa mid-19th century) former Phillipsport schoolhouse.
After many years of service, we continue to assist, youth, seniors, the underprivileged, and others within the community through donations, fundraisers, gifts, and services in kind. We are located at 657 Red Hill Road in beautiful Phillipsport, New York. Come Join us and help us to make a difference!
Experience the Town of Mamakating!
Organized on March 7, 1788, the town of Mamakating was the first township of Sullivan County, NY, with the first county seat in Bloomingburg.
Construction of forts along the Old Mine Road (today US 209) during the early and middle 18th century was necessary to protect the settlers from hostile Native Americans. Three forts were built in Mamakating. Built in 1750, on what is now the Sullivan and Orange county border was Fort Westbrookville. Fort Devans was built In 1757 north of the village of Wurtsboro. On the east side of the Bloomingburgh Mountain, Fort Roosa was built in 1731. Fort Roosa is considered the oldest building in Sullivan County.
In 1788 Mamakating was reduced to its present size with the forming of Deerpark, Orange County in 1788. The town of Lumberland was formed from Mamakating in 1798, the town of Thompson in 1803 and part of Forestburgh was formed in 1837.
In 1825 the Delaware and Hudson Canal was constructed by the Wurts brothers. The D and H Canal brought much prosperity to Mamakating and Sullivan County. In 1899 the railroad arrived, marking the decline of the D and H canal. Through the ongoing efforts of many citizens and organizations, areas of the old canal remain where one can see ruins of the D and H canal. Along the line of the canal between Summitville and Phillipsport there is a lone stretch of preserved canal and towpath, with a dry-dock, and a small museum open to the public.
Many historic landmarks in Mamakating exist today. One of the oldest tombstones in the state is the grave of Manual Gonsalus. Gonsalus was the first non-Native American settler. His tombstone is dated April 18, 1752. The lovely Phillipsport United Methodist Church, built in 1823, depicts country days gone by. The enchanting Phillipsport Schoolhouse, circa mid-19th century, resides majestically just above the church, and the Bloomingburgh Reformed Church built in 1820, lends a stately presence overlooking the village.
For those awed by the wonders of nature, the Bashakill Wetlands in Wurtsboro emit a call of the wild to all who pass through the vast natural lands. The Bashakill is the largest freshwater wetland in southeastern NY, and is a Wildlife Management Area sure to amaze all who visit.
